Hackers gain entry to R.I. Human Services Web site

The state Web site that tells Rhode Islanders who is eligible for Medicaid and how to sign up has been down for more than a week — ever since the company the state pays to host the site discovered hackers had gotten in and posted information that didn’t belong.

State officials say no private information was compromised, nor did they see a need to request a state police investigation. But the site, the official Web domain for the Department of Human Services, remains down and might not be back online until early next week.

“They need to sanitize it,” said Ernest Quaglieri, the state’s chief information security officer. “Go through the site, and make sure there is nothing there that should not be there.” HP Enterprise Services, which processes Medicaid claims for the state and hosts the Web site, notified the state of the hacking activity on Dec. 9.
