Review: Apple's Front Row
Posted by l33tdawg on Tuesday, December 06, 2005 - 12:32 AM (Reads: 3302)
Source: ABC News

Apple's Front Row is the new "10-foot"–style interface found on the third generation iMac G5 (iSight). Similar to Microsoft's Windows Media Center Edition, it lets users experience the music, movies, photos, and video they have stored on their iMacs from the comfort of their couches or dorm beds, thanks to the included Apple Remote. But is it on par with Microsoft's popular Media Center Edition? Not quite…at least, not yet. Front Row resembles Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005 in that it simplifies media playback by dividing the interface into sections (such as Music, Photos, Videos, and DVD). You can view digital photos from your iPhotolibrary, listen to music and podcasts from iTunes, watch movie trailers from the online QuickTime library, watch DVDs, and view your home movies in iMovie. You can also use Front Row to watch the very limited selection of downloadable TV shows and video podcasts from the iTunes library, but you can't watch live TV or perform PVR functions, due to the iMac's lack of a TV tuner. Third-party USB TV tuners are available from companies like Elgato Systems, Eskape Labs, and ATI Technologies, but they use stand-alone PVR packages that don't interface with Front Row (for now).
